Nathan Smith, Danni Wyatt-Hodge Named ICC Players of the Month for June After Stellar Performances

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced New Zealand’s paceman Nathan Smith and England opener Danni Wyatt-Hodge as the Men’s and Women’s Player of the Month, respectively, for their remarkable performances during June. Smith, who was at his very best for New Zealand, played a crucial role in steering his team to an historic Test series win in England, while Wyatt-Hodge shone throughout the 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup on home soil, hitting several well-timed centuries to steer England to the final.

Nathan Smith’s breakthrough series earns global recognition

Nathan Smith’s rise to fame took off when the young 28-year-old fast bowler became the leading wicket-taker as New Zealand recorded a 2-1 Test series win over England. Smith beat competition from India captain Shubman Gill and Bangladesh all-rounder Mossadek Hossain to win the award.

He picked up 16 wickets in the three-match series at an astonishing average of 23.00, top scoring with a brilliant six for 70 in England’s second innings at Lord’s during the opening Test. Smith, who played the first two Tests as an opener due to injuries to New Zealand’s pace bowling attack, claimed a remarkable nine wickets in the match.

“I’m really thrilled to receive this award, but I would have preferred a series win for New Zealand,” said Smith. “It was a fantastic tour for our team, and it’s great to get this award. I’m always more focused on playing for the team rather than the personal accolades, but it’s always pleasing to get individual recognition, as well as winning the series.

“It is a huge honor to contribute to the team’s success in this manner. It’s all I ever wanted for New Zealand, to do my part, and play as much as possible. It was unfortunate that injuries ruled New Zealand’s pace bowling attack out, which meant I had to open the batting as well as bowl some overs at the beginning.

“I have always batted at the top of the order for my domestic team, and I did the odd Test innings for New Zealand, as well. It was good to take up the responsibility, but at the same time, I have enjoyed being able to bowl a few overs at the start.”

Smith demonstrated his excellent skills, drawing attention from overseas franchises. In addition, his performances showed that he can thrive under pressure, taking up greater responsibilities while New Zealand’s bowling unit was forced to the front due to injuries.

Danni Wyatt-Hodge shines on the biggest stage

England opener Danni Wyatt-Hodge has been rewarded for a stunning Women’s T20 World Cup with the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award for June. The England star has beaten fellow contenders Scotland captain Kathryn Bryce and left-arm spinner Sree Charani from India to claim the prestigious award.

With scores to boast of in the league stage, Wyatt-Hodge emerged as the first run-scorer in the competition. The batter registered two impeccable unbeaten knocks, scoring 105 runs from 62 balls against Sri Lanka and 89 from 53 deliveries in a thrilling chase against reigning champions New Zealand.

She followed her unbeaten knock against New Zealand with an unbeaten century against New Zealand in the final at Lord’s. Wyatt-Hodge was named Player of the Match in both games as England made it to the final at Lord’s.

Speaking about her achievement, Wyatt-Hodge said that being named ICC Women’s Player of the Month was a special feeling as she was able to achieve this feat at home in a World Cup.

“It is a real honor to have received the award as I feel it was for performances in a World Cup on home soil. The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup was an incredible event for women’s cricket, and the opportunity to play at Lord’s in the final is something that I know my teammates and I will look back on with fondness for years to come.

Although we narrowly missed out on winning the tournament, we gave our all on the big stage and were delighted to be a part of such a momentous event that captivated fans all over the world. We hope it will inspire a new generation of girls and boys to engage with the women’s game for many years to come. The recognition is a special feeling, and I want to thank the ICC for the award. I hope to continue to deliver for England in the years to come with many more match-winning performances.”

ICC Player of the Month awards are selected by a vote of global cricket fans, along with a panel of journalists and ex-players.
