How will the qualification for the World Cup happen?

ICC has fixed the cut-off date for qualification as 30 September 2026. Being hosts, South Africa and Zimbabwe have got direct entry into the World Cup. Apart from these, the top 8 teams in the ICC ODI rankings till the cut-off date will also directly qualify for the World Cup. The remaining 4 teams will have to earn their place by playing the qualifier tournament.

So far, South Africa, Zimbabwe, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and England have almost confirmed their places for the 2027 ODI World Cup. At the same time, Afghanistan and Bangladesh are also in good positions in the ODI rankings. If they maintain their ranking till the cut-off, they will also get the direct ticket. How will be the new format of 2027 ODI World Cup?

This time ICC has divided the tournament into three phases. Under this, fans will also get complete pleasure in watching matches against weaker teams.

First phase – Super Series

First of all, the teams ranked 12th, 13th and 14th in the ranking will play the super series. Only one of these teams will reach the next round.

Second stage – Group stage

After this, a total of 12 teams will be divided into two groups. There will be 6-6 teams in each group. Top-3 teams from both the groups will reach the next round. Apart from this, one team performing better among the fourth placed teams of both the groups will also advance. In this way, a total of 7 teams will make it to the third phase.

Third Stage – Super 7

The 7 teams that have reached the third stage will play among themselves in round-robin format. There will be a total of 21 matches in this round. After this, the top-4 teams in the points table will reach the semi-finals. The two teams that win the semi-finals will face each other in the final.
