Shakib Al Hasan House Attack: Petrol Bomb Thrown At Former Bangladesh Captain’s Residence After Sheikh Hasina’s Press Conference

The ancestral home of former Bangladesh cricket captain and Magura-1 Member of Parliament Shakib Al Hasan was attacked and vandalised on Wednesday evening. The incident occurred shortly after the star all-rounder made a virtual appearance at a press conference alongside ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Authorities have deployed security personnel to the area as investigations continue.

What Happened at Shakib Al Hasan’s Residence?

Around 8:45 pm, unidentified individuals targeted Shakib’s family home in the Keshabmor area of Magura town. Attackers hurled brick chips and stones, shattering the glass windows of the property. According to local reports and eyewitnesses, the group also poured petrol near the main iron gate and threw a petrol bomb in an attempt to set the house ablaze. The resulting minor fire at the gate was extinguished by local residents before it could spread. The house was mostly unoccupied at the time, with only a caretaker present, and no injuries were reported.

The vandalism took place just hours after Shakib participated in a virtual media interaction hosted by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia in New Delhi. The event was led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Shakib is currently in Sri Lanka, where he was playing a match in the Lanka Premier League just minutes before the press conference began. Just after finishing his game, he joined the virtual event directly from his team bus. Following the attack, the Awami League issued a statement claiming the arson attempt was a direct retaliation for his participation in the press conference.

“Ahead of the press conference, BNP, Islamist Jamaat and NCP all publicly threatened national media outlets to weaponise the judiciary to sue in case there were reports of the press conferences. This calculated attack is yet another testament to the ongoing genocidal campaign against Awami League activists in the name of a democracy-building project, a hallmark of fascism,” the statement added. 

The Officer-in-Charge of the Magura Sadar Police Station, Md Abdullah Al Mamun, confirmed the vandalism and the attempted arson. Police officials stated that several miscreants attempted to set the property on fire, but their exact identities remain unknown.
