Monsoon session: Lok Sabha proceedings adjourned for the day amid loud sloganeering by opposition MPs.

New Delhi, 21 July. On Tuesday, the second day of the monsoon session of Parliament, the proceedings of the Lok Sabha were adjourned for the day amid tremendous uproar and sloganeering by the opposition. The proceedings of the House will resume at 11 am on Wednesday. This was the third time in the day that the proceedings of the House had to be adjourned as the ongoing ruckus from the opposition did not subside.

Dilip Saikia, sitting in the Speaker’s chair, repeatedly requested the MPs to sit in their seats, maintain the decorum of the House and allow the proceedings to proceed under Rule 377, however, the opposition members ignored these requests and continued the ruckus in the middle of the House (in the Well). Ultimately, the House proceedings had to be adjourned for the day.

Earlier, Speaker Om Birla had adjourned the House till afternoon as normal proceedings could not be conducted due to repeated uproar. Appealing to the members to allow the House to function, Birla said, ‘Don’t you want the House to function? Everyone will get a chance to express their views. However, the opposition continued their protest and sloganeering, which disrupted the proceedings and later led to the adjournment of the House for the first time.

The proceedings of the House resumed in the afternoon, but even during this time the proceedings continued to be disrupted due to continuous sloganeering and protests by the opposition members. Sandhya Rai, who was presiding over the House, repeatedly appealed to the opposition members to maintain order, but when her request was not heeded, she announced the adjournment of the House.

Despite repeated appeals by the Speaker to maintain peace and return to their seats, the opposition members continued raising slogans. Due to the continuing uproar, the proceedings of the House had to be adjourned once again. Overall, the situation was similar to the first day of the monsoon session, when due to opposition’s protests and repeated uproar, the proceedings of both the Houses of Parliament were disrupted several times and had to be adjourned repeatedly.

The opposition protested demanding discussion on several issues, including the exam paper leak and the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP)-led protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. Due to these reasons, parliamentary work was repeatedly disrupted.
