Bajaj’s big EV bet, first electric bike could arrive in FY28, Chetak production to increase

Bajaj Electric Bike FY28: India’s leading two-wheeler manufacturer, Bajaj Auto, is now poised to take a major step into the electric mobility sector. The company has indicated that its first mass-market electric motorcycle could be launched around fiscal year 2028 (FY28). This announcement makes it clear that Bajaj no longer intends to limit itself to electric scooters but is also preparing to establish a strong presence in the electric bike segment.

Set to launch in FY28

According to the company’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Dinesh Thapar, development of the electric motorcycle is progressing rapidly. If everything goes as planned, it will be launched during FY28. Initially, the model will be launched in overseas markets and later made available to Indian customers.

The main thing

Bajaj’s first mass-market electric bike is expected to launch around FY28, focusing first on overseas markets and then on the Indian market.

Not just bikes, the entire EV portfolio will grow

Bajaj plans to significantly expand its electric portfolio in the coming years. This includes:

  • electric scooter
  • Electric Motorcycle
  • Electric three-wheeler
  • E-rickshaw

The company’s decision comes at a time when Delhi’s proposed EV Policy 2.0 plans to ban the registration of new petrol and CNG two-wheelers from April 1, 2028. This is likely to further intensify competition in the electric bike market.

Increase in production capacity by 20%

At present, keeping in view the increasing demand, Bajaj is going to increase its total manufacturing capacity by about 20 percent.
