Gujarat has created a new record in purchasing farmers’ produce at Minimum Support Price (MSP). Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the state government has implemented a technology-based transparent procurement system, due to which farmers are being paid for their produce directly into bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). The government claims that this system has provided timely payment, transparency and relief to the farmers from middlemen.
The farmers who came to sell their crops in the grain markets seem satisfied with the new arrangement. Earlier, farmers had to wait a long time to get payment after selling their crops and many times they had to sell their produce in the market at a price lower than the MSP. Now with online registration, notification through SMS and payment directly into the bank account through DBT, the entire process has become faster and simpler.
Ishwar Rabari, a farmer from Banaskantha, said, “The government is purchasing their produce at MSP and the payment immediately reaches their online bank account. This enables them to withdraw the amount directly from the bank when needed and do their other financial work easily.”
Farmer Kanjibhai Chaudhary said, “The government purchases millet at the fixed MSP, due to which farmers get better prices than the market and their income improves.”
Gujarat Government has made the entire process digital for procurement at the MSP fixed by the Central Government. Features like online registration, SMS alerts and DBT have made the procurement system more transparent and effective.
According to the data, in the year 2016-17, MSP worth about Rs 1,775 crore was procured from only 2.01 lakh farmers in the state. In 2025-26, this figure increased to more than 14 lakh farmers. During this period, 32.54 lakh metric tonnes of produce was purchased and approximately Rs 23,800 crore was paid to the farmers directly into their bank accounts.
Agriculture Officer M.B. Patel said that the state government is constantly making efforts to ensure that farmers get fair prices for their produce. He said that there has been a significant increase in procurement at MSP in the last ten years and now the value of procurement has reached more than Rs 23,000 crore.
Major crops like groundnut, cotton, gram and pigeon pea are being procured on a large scale under MSP in the state. According to government data, Rs 31,941 crore was paid to farmers on the purchase of 52.48 lakh metric tonnes of groundnut in the last ten years.
During the same period, Rs 17,759 crore was paid for the purchase of 25.23 lakh metric tonnes of cotton, Rs 9,549 crore for 16.81 lakh metric tonnes of gram and Rs 3,222 crore for the purchase of 4.97 lakh metric tonnes of pigeon pea.
Apart from this, producers of crops like moong, urad, mustard and soybean are also getting the benefit of the MSP scheme. The government says that the technology-based procurement system and timely payment has increased the confidence of farmers and more farmers are joining the MSP system.
