A big-budget sci-fi disaster film starring Patrick Wilson is getting a second chance with viewers. Years after struggling in theaters, it has climbed into Prime Video’s most-watched movies. The 2022 release has unexpectedly entered Amazon Prime Video’s U.S. Top 10 rankings, proving that streaming audiences are giving the ambitious space adventure another look after its disappointing box office run.
Patrick Wilson’s Moonfall finds streaming success on Prime Video
As per FlixpatrolMoonfall currently ranks No. 5 on Amazon Prime Video’s Top 10 movies in the United States and sits at No. 8 on the platform’s overall Top 10 list, showing renewed interest in the once-overlooked sci-fi spectacle.
Directed and co-written by Roland Emmerich, the filmmaker known for blockbuster disaster movies like Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, and 2012, the film features Patrick Wilson, Halle Berry, John Bradley, Michael Peña, Charlie Plummer, and Donald Sutherland.
The story follows former astronaut Brian Harper (Wilson), NASA executive Jocinda Fowler (Berry), and conspiracy enthusiast K.C. Houseman (Bradley) as they team up to save Earth after the Moon suddenly shifts out of its orbit, putting the entire planet in danger.
Moonfall arrived in theaters in February 2022, released by Lionsgate in the U.S. and backed by Centropolis Entertainment. Staying true to Roland Emmerich’s disaster-movie style, it went all in on massive action and world-ending spectacle.
That ambition came with a hefty price tag, with reports putting the budget around $150 million. Unfortunately, the gamble didn’t pay off at the box office, as the film brought in only around $67 million worldwide.
Reviews landed all over the map. Critics gave Moonfall a 35% score on Rotten Tomatoeswhile audiences were much kinder, pushing its Popcornmeter to 69%. It also holds a 5.2/10 rating on IMDb. Some viewers couldn’t get on board with its wild, over-the-top story, but others embraced the ride, praising the eye-catching visual effects and story elements.
