Rahmat Shah becomes the new Test and ODI captain of Afghanistan, former KKR batsman gets vice-captaincy

Delhi: Afghanistan Cricket Board has announced the new captain of its Test and ODI team. Experienced batsman Rahmat Shah has been appointed as the new captain. At the same time, former explosive wicketkeeper-batsman of KKR Rahmanullah Gurbaz has been made the vice-captain of the Test and ODI team.

Rahmat Shah replaced Hashmatullah Shahidi

33-year-old Rahmat Shah will now take over the responsibility of captaincy in place of Hashmatullah Shahidi. Shahidi took command of Afghanistan’s ODI team in January 2022. Under his leadership the team played 55 ODI matches, in which the team won 27 matches. Now he has left the captaincy and the board has handed over this responsibility to Rahmat Shah.

However, this new role is not completely new for Rahmat Shah. He was serving as the vice-captain of the Test and ODI team since May 2021. In such a situation, his coordination with the team and players is already quite good.

ACB expressed confidence in Rahmat Shah

Afghanistan Cricket Board said in its statement that Hashmatullah Shahidi did a great job for the team as captain and the board appreciates his contribution. Also, the board congratulated Rahmat Shah for his new responsibility and expressed hope that the team will achieve further success under his leadership.

The board believes that Rahmat Shah’s experience, leadership ability and his ability to understand the team well will prove to be very beneficial for Afghanistan cricket.

History was made under Shahidi’s captaincy

Under the captaincy of Hashmatullah Shahidi, Afghanistan registered many memorable victories in ODI cricket. Especially in the 2023 ODI World Cup, the team performed brilliantly and secured sixth place. In that tournament, Afghanistan surprised everyone by defeating strong teams like England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Netherlands.

Shahidi’s captaincy proved that Afghanistan is no longer just an emerging team but has become a strong entity that can challenge big teams.

Gurbaz also got big responsibility

Rahmanullah Gurbaz has been made the vice-captain of the Test and ODI team. Now the responsibility of the new beginning of Afghanistan cricket will be on the pair of captain Rahmat Shah and vice-captain Gurbaz.
