Flood devastation in Assam: 21 deaths in 24 hours, 5.64 lakh people affected, 872 villages submerged in water.

New Delhi: Continuous rains in Assam and rising water level of rivers have made the flood situation very serious. Let us tell you, lakhs of people in 16 districts of the state are affected by this natural disaster. During the last 24 hours, 21 people have been confirmed dead in floods and related incidents, out of which maximum 13 deaths have been recorded in Sivasagar district. According to the information, in view of the situation, along with the state administration, teams of Army, NDRF and SDRF are engaged in relief and rescue operations.

Which districts were most affected?

According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), many districts including Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Golaghat, Charaideo, Dhemaji, Tinsukia, Nagaon, Biswanath, Kamrup and Karbi Anglong are affected by floods. More than 5.64 lakh people across the state are in the grip of this disaster, while 872 villages have been completely submerged. Due to so much flood water entering residential areas and agricultural lands, life has become disrupted and road connectivity has also been disrupted at many places.

The impact of floods is also clearly visible on the agricultural sector. More than 24 thousand hectares of cultivable land has been submerged in water, causing huge damage to many crops including paddy. The livelihood crisis facing farmers is deepening.

Operation Water Relief-3 continues in Asar

Considering the seriousness of the situation, the Indian Army has launched ‘Operation Water Relief-3’ on the request of the state government. Under this, special relief and rescue teams have been deployed in Sivasagar, Jorhat and Charaideo districts. The Army says that if needed, additional resources will also be made available immediately.

According to the Central Water Commission, the Brahmaputra river is flowing above the danger mark in Nimatighat area of Jorhat. Apart from this, the water level of Dikhau, Disang, Buridihing and Dhansiri rivers is also continuously increasing. Some of these rivers have reached near their highest flood level, which has further increased the danger in low-lying areas. Along with this, the capital Guwahati is also facing the problem of waterlogging. Movement of people has been affected due to water logging on roads in Satgaon, Saukuchi, Boragaon, Maligaon, Chandmari and many areas of North Guwahati.

Relief work continues

As part of relief and rescue operations, NDRF and SDRF teams are continuously conducting operations in the affected areas. SDRF teams are transporting people to safe places with the help of 62 boats, while the administration has set up relief camps in various districts and arranged for food, drinking water and health services for the displaced families. However, in view of the warning from the Meteorological Department and the continuously rising water level, the administration has expressed the possibility of the situation becoming more challenging in the coming days.
