WhatsApp iPad App: Create an Account Without a Phone
This was the most widely requested WhatsApp feature since the WhatsApp iPad app was launched. Since WhatsApp for iPad launched last year, people have requested the ability to create an account directly on their iPad without linking to their phone. Now, users can register for an account directly in the iPad app and set it up.
Before this update, setting up the WhatsApp iPad app required an existing WhatsApp account on a phone, which was then linked to the iPad as a companion device. That forced iPad-first users through a setup flow that assumed a phone existed. Registration still requires a phone number to receive a verification code, but after setup the iPad functions as a standalone device rather than a linked companion.
The practical difference: your iPad WhatsApp account is now its own account, not a mirror of a phone account. You can receive messages when your phone is off, switch messaging apps on your phone without affecting WhatsApp on iPad, and use the iPad as your primary WhatsApp device if that’s how your life is set up.
WhatsApp CarPlay and WhatsApp Android Auto: Beyond Messaging
The latest WhatsApp update has worked on CarPlay and Android Auto for some time, but the feature set was narrow: you could compose and send messages, and that was mostly it. WhatsApp has completely refreshed the experience on both. Now you can hear and respond to messages, make calls, view your call history, and reach your favorites, all hands-free and right from your car’s screen.
The refresh expands WhatsApp’s in-car role beyond reading and replying to messages by adding calling, call history, and direct access to favorite contacts. For anyone who uses WhatsApp as their primary communication channel with family and close friends, this closes a significant gap. Being able to call a WhatsApp contact hands-free from your car’s display or check missed WhatsApp calls during a commute brings it in line with what phone apps have offered through CarPlay and Android Auto for years.
Meta didn’t specify minimum software, vehicle or infotainment system requirements for the new features. If your current CarPlay or Android Auto setup already showed WhatsApp in your app list, the refreshed interface should update automatically.
Adobe Acrobat PDFs: View and Annotate Without Downloading
If you have ever received a PDF in WhatsApp and then watched it sit unread in your Downloads folder because opening it interrupted whatever conversation you were in, this update directly addresses that workflow friction.
With the new WhatsApp PDF feature, you can now open PDFs directly in WhatsApp without downloading them, then make lightweight edits like highlighting and annotating right in the chat. The integration is powered by Adobe Acrobat and is available on WhatsApp Web and the WhatsApp Windows desktop app.
Shared PDFs remain protected by WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption, so the document content is not passing through Adobe’s servers unprotected. The Acrobat engine handles the rendering and annotation layer within WhatsApp’s existing security framework.
Highlighting and annotating are the supported editing actions. More complex PDF editing (rearranging pages, filling forms, adding signatures) is not mentioned as part of the in-chat experience; for that level of editing, exporting to Acrobat’s full app would still be required. But for reviewing a contract, marking up a draft document, or annotating a shared report, the in-chat experience removes the workflow interruption that downloading and switching apps previously created.
Spotify and Apple Music on Status: Your Listening Activity Goes Social
WhatsApp Status Music feature lets you share what you’re listening to in Apple Music or Spotify directly to your WhatsApp Status. WhatsApp Status works like Instagram Stories: a 24-hour-visible update that contacts can view and react to. The music sharing feature adds a card-style post directly from either streaming app, showing the song and artist, with a link back to the track.
With just a couple of taps, your friends can see what you’re into right now, making your WhatsApp Status even more uniquely you, according to WhatsApp’s blog post. The new WhatsApp feature supports both services simultaneously; you don’t have to choose between Spotify and Apple Music based on which one WhatsApp integrates with.
For users who already share music recommendations via WhatsApp messages, this formalizes that behavior in a WhatsApp Status format, making it a passive expression of what you’re listening to. It’s a social layer sitting between private messaging and public social media, which is exactly how WhatsApp Status has always been positioned.
Meta WhatsApp Update Focuses on Cross-Device Experience
Meta said the features were rolling out as of July 22. “Rolling out” means not all users will see every feature immediately, as Meta typically deploys updates in staged waves, with some users getting features earlier than others based on app version and account region. If you don’t see a specific feature today, checking for an app update in the App Store, Google Play, or the WhatsApp desktop download page is the first step.
The WhatsApp iPad sign-up requires the current version of the WhatsApp iPad app from the App Store. The CarPlay and Android Auto changes should appear automatically in the next WhatsApp app update. The Acrobat integration applies specifically to WhatsApp Web (browser) and WhatsApp for Windows desktop. Sharing on Spotify and Apple Music requires the latest version of the WhatsApp mobile app.

WhatsApp has been announcing a consistent cadence of feature updates throughout 2026. Earlier this year, Document Sharing with Meta AI and Private Messaging both shipped.
The July 22 package focuses on cross-device and cross-platform utility rather than AI features, suggesting Meta is actively working to make WhatsApp competitive with iMessage and Telegram’s multi-device experiences. A WhatsApp app for Android tablets has not been announced, though the iPad precedent makes it a likely next step.
