Business Desk – Amazon AI Layoffs 2026: Amazon, one of the e-commerce and world’s largest tech companies, has once again announced layoffs of employees. This time the company has decided to terminate the jobs of employees in its Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) division.
However, the company did not say how many employees would be affected by this decision. This step has been taken at a time when companies like Google, Microsoft and OpenAI are moving forward rapidly in the race of Artificial Intelligence.
Focus on AI projects, hence restructuring
Amazon says that the change in the AGI team is part of the reorganization of the teams. According to the company, its aim is to make AI projects more effective and focus more on those projects which directly benefit customers. The company made it clear that it will continue its investment and development in AI as before.
Investing heavily in AGI for last several years
Amazon has been investing heavily in Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) technology for the last several years. AGI is considered to be a technology that works towards developing the ability to think, understand and take decisions like humans. Whereas existing AI systems mainly work on the basis of fixed instructions.
Is Amazon retreating from the AI race?
Experts believe that this layoff does not mean that Amazon is retreating from the AI race. Rather, the company now wants to give priority to those projects and teams which are delivering rapid business results and whose direct benefits reach the customers.
Continuous changes happening in AGI team
There have been continuous changes in Amazon’s AGI division for some time now. Last year, senior AI division officer Rohit Prasad left the company. After this, at the beginning of this year, the head of the AGI department, David Luan, also resigned. Now the company has started laying off employees in this department. Many affected employees have also posted on social media in this regard.
