Argentina’s experienced defender Nicolas Otamendi has announced his retirement from international football. With this, the brilliant 17-year-old international career of the 38-year-old player has come to an end. During this period, he played an important role in helping Argentina win the 2022 FIFA World Cup and two Copa America titles.
Otamendi played 139 international matches for Argentina and represented the country at four FIFA World Cup tournaments. He was also a member of the Argentina team that finished runner-up at the recent FIFA World Cup 2026 in the United States. Argentina lost the final to Spain 1–0 in extra time.
Announcing his retirement, Otamendi shared an emotional message on Instagram. He wrote, “Today I have to write the most difficult words of my career. Fate has decided that my last match will be the World Cup final. The result was not what we thought, but I am leaving with pride because this team gave its best till the end. Argentina, thank you for giving me the opportunity to fulfill my dream of becoming world champion.”
Otamendi recently decided to join Argentine giants River Plate after a successful 16-year career in Europe. In Europe, he represented big clubs such as Porto, Valencia, Manchester City and Benfica, and achieved many memorable successes. Known for his strong defensive play, leadership skills and stubborn attitude, Otamendi is considered one of the most successful defenders in Argentine football. His retirement also ended a golden chapter in Argentine football.
