Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief C. Joseph Vijay’s wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam, has officially withdrawn her divorce petition, bringing months of legal proceedings to an end.
The family court accepted Sangeetha’s request on Friday after she appeared through video conferencing and informed the court of her decision to withdraw the case. With the petition withdrawn, the court formally closed the proceedings.
Divorce Proceedings Come to an End
Sangeetha had filed for divorce in February this year before a family court in Chengalpattu, seeking the dissolution of her marriage with Vijay. In her petition, she had cited irreconcilable differences between the couple.
She had also sought permanent alimony and requested permission to continue residing at the couple’s matrimonial home in Neelankarai, Chennai.
The case witnessed multiple adjournments over the past several months. During a hearing on June 15, Sangeetha had already indicated her intention to withdraw the petition. The matter was then deferred to August 7 for further proceedings.
On Friday, she confirmed her decision before the court through video conferencing, leading to the formal closure of the case.
Several Hearings Witnessed Adjournments
The matrimonial dispute saw repeated delays, with both Vijay and Sangeetha remaining absent from several hearings. Their legal representatives appeared on their behalf, informing the court that the couple was unable to attend in person.
Last month, the proceedings were postponed after neither party appeared before the court.
Friday’s hearing marked the conclusion of the legal matter after Sangeetha officially withdrew her plea.
Vijay and Sangeetha’s Marriage
Vijay and Sangeetha have shared a relationship spanning nearly three decades. The couple married on August 25, 1999, in Chennai in a traditional Hindu ceremony.
They have two children—a son born in 2000 and a daughter born in 2005.
Speculation surrounding their marriage first surfaced in 2023 when Sangeetha was absent from several public events attended by Vijay. Although reports of marital differences were dismissed at the time, questions resurfaced in 2025 when she skipped key political programmes organised by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.
TVK Leads Tamil Nadu Government
Vijay entered office after the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerged as the single-largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, ending the long-standing dominance of the DMK and AIADMK.
The party formed the government with the support of alliance partners, including the Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML, resulting in Tamil Nadu’s first coalition government in decades.
With the withdrawal of the divorce petition, the legal proceedings involving the Chief Minister and his wife have now officially come to a close.
