London, Aug 7:
Joe Root has been named captain of England’s Test team as the side begins a new phase post the ‘Bazball’ era, with a 16-member squad announced for the first two Tests against Pakistan.
Root takes over the leadership from Ben Stokes, who retired from international cricket after the recent series against New Zealand. The leadership change also coincides with a coaching shift, as Brendon McCullum steps down and Stephen Fleming assumes charge as head coach.
The squad also sees the return of batter Dan Lawrence, who has been recalled to the Test setup after a two-year gap.
The upcoming series against Pakistan forms part of the ongoing World Test Championship cycle.
