WhatsApp’s parent company Meta is now preparing to introduce its own independent cloud storage system to reduce dependence on Google Drive and iCloud. With this new facility, users are likely to have to pay after a certain limit to keep chat and media backups safe.
What exactly is the new change?
Currently, WhatsApp backup for Android users is counted towards Google Drive’s 15 GB free limit. While iPhone users’ data is stored within iCloud’s 5 GB limit. If your Google or Apple account runs out of space, the backup stops. As an alternative to this problem, WhatsApp is testing its own in-built cloud storage on its ‘iOS’ and ‘Android’ beta versions. Free storage and paid plans available
Under this new cloud service of WhatsApp, users will initially be given only up to 2 GB of data for free backup. If the size of your chats, photos and videos is more than 2 GB, then you will have to buy the company’s paid subscription for additional space. According to preliminary information, the company may charge approximately Rs 80 to 95 per month for 50 GB of storage. Security is a priority
Meta has clarified that all data saved on WhatsApp’s own servers will be ‘end-to-end encrypted by default’. That is, WhatsApp or Meta itself will not be able to read your messages.
