The Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2026 has reached a decisive stage, with four places at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup now on the line. The quarter-finals in Morocco will determine which teams advance to the last four and secure direct qualification for the global tournament in Brazil.
The competition doubles as Africa’s World Cup qualifying tournament, making every quarter-final particularly important. The four semi-finalists will claim the continent’s automatic berths at the 32-team World Cup, scheduled to take place from June 24 to July 25, 2027.
Three of Africa’s four representatives from the 2023 World Cup remain in the hunt. However, Morocco and defending champions South Africa have been drawn against each other in Rabat, meaning one of the two will miss out on a direct World Cup place.
WAFCON 2026 Quarter-Finals: Teams Fighting For World Cup Qualification
The knockout action begins with Algeria facing Ivory Coast in Casablanca on Saturday. Ivory Coast have previously appeared at the 2015 World Cup, while Algeria are still searching for their first qualification.
Later that day, hosts Morocco meet South Africa in a heavyweight African clash. The result will guarantee one familiar World Cup nation a place in Brazil while eliminating the other from automatic qualification.
Sunday brings two more crucial encounters. Defending champions Nigeria take on Cameroon in Casablanca after recovering from an opening defeat to Malawi with victories over Zambia and Egypt. Nigeria have appeared at every Women’s World Cup since the inaugural edition in 1991 and are targeting a 10th appearance.
Malawi, meanwhile, face Ghana in Rabat. The Malawi side made history by reaching the WAFCON for the first time and could secure their maiden World Cup appearance. The Chawinga sisters have also played a key role, combining for five goals during the tournament.
What Happens To WAFCON Quarter-Final Losers?
The four quarter-final winners will automatically qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup and advance to the WAFCON semi-finals.
However, defeat in the last eight will not necessarily end a team’s World Cup hopes. Two of the quarter-final losers will receive another route through additional WAFCON playoffs on August 13 before potentially entering separate inter-confederation playoff tournaments scheduled for November and February.
The WAFCON semi-finals are scheduled for Wednesday, while the final will take place in Rabat on August 16. With four World Cup places at stake, the quarter-finals represent the most important stage yet of the tournament.
