Last month, India celebrated it’s first ever Rowing World Cup gold medal with much pomp. Now, the nation has been stripped off the medal after one half of the lightweight doubles sculls team tested positive for doping.
The duo of Lakshay and Ujjwal Kumar Singh had clocked 6:26.09s at the Rostsee Lake in Lucerne, Switzerland in June.
Lakshay has now tested positive for Stanozolol, a performance enhancing drug, as per a report in The Tribune.
His samples returned positive with the substance in an out-of-competition test taken on 25 May earlier this year.
Lakshay has now been provisionally suspended by the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) and has been issued a notice.
All of Lakshay’s performances after the sample was taken will be disqualified, meaning that India will be stripped of the Rowing World Cup gold medal as well.
He is also staring at a four-year suspension if he is unable to clear his name.
