Floods in Assam have once again taken a frightening form. After the death of 14 more people in the last 24 hours, the death toll has increased to 61. 12 districts of the state are in the grip of floods and more than 7.05 lakh people have been affected. 856 villages are submerged, while more than 3.15 lakh people have to take shelter in relief camps. The flood has also affected agriculture and livestock. More than 56 thousand hectares of crops are submerged in water and 17,107 animals and poultry have been washed away in the last 24 hours.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the situation as serious and said that the number of deaths may increase. CM said that due to cloud burst and continuous heavy rains in neighboring Nagaland, the water level of Brahmaputra and its tributaries has increased rapidly. This is the reason why flood situation occurs in Assam every year during monsoon.

According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the death toll due to floods has increased to 61 after 14 more people died in the last 24 hours. 12 districts of the state are currently in the grip of floods and more than 7.05 lakh people are affected. At the same time, one person is still reported missing in Sivasagar district.
Which districts are most affected?
The districts most affected by floods include Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat. In Sivasagar alone, more than 3.48 lakh people are affected by the flood, while in Charaideo, more than 1.88 lakh people and in Jorhat are affected by it.
How many villages are submerged due to flood?
The impact of floods has reached 37 revenue circles and 856 villages. The situation is such that a large number of people have had to leave their homes. The administration has set up 363 relief camps and distribution centers in the affected areas, where more than 3.15 lakh people are taking shelter. The rescue operation is also continuing. Teams of NDRF, SDRF and local administration have conducted joint operations and evacuated about 1,000 people to safe places.
Huge loss to farming and poultry also
This flood has deeply hurt not only the lives of the people but also the livelihood of the farmers. More than 56,606 hectares of agricultural land is still submerged in water, causing huge damage to crops. Livestock have also been hit by the floods. In the last 24 hours, 17,107 animals and poultry were washed away, while a total of more than 3.34 lakh animals and poultry have been affected by the floods. This loss in rural areas can further increase the economic crisis.
What did the Chief Minister say?
Seeing the seriousness of the flood, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited a relief camp in Dergaon. Describing the situation as worrying, he expressed fear that the death toll may increase further. According to the Chief Minister, due to the cloudburst incident in neighboring Nagaland, the flood situation in many districts has become more serious. Meanwhile, due to continuous rains, the water level of Brahmaputra and many of its tributaries is continuously rising, due to which new challenges are being posed to the relief operations.
After all, why do floods occur in Assam every year?
The biggest reason for floods in Assam every year is its geographical location and the huge catchment area of the Brahmaputra river. During monsoon, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Bhutan and surrounding hilly areas receive heavy rains. The water from these areas rapidly reaches the Brahmaputra and its tributaries, due to which the water level of the river suddenly increases.
Brahmaputra also brings with it a large amount of silt. This silt keeps accumulating in the river bed every year, due to which the depth of the river reduces and the water starts flowing out of the banks quickly. Experts believe that due to climate change, incidents of extreme rainfall in a short period of time are increasing, due to which floods are becoming more destructive than before. In such a situation, floods become a big challenge for Assam every monsoon.
