Layoff Notice: Thousands and millions of jobs have been lost in recent years, both domestically and internationally. In India, many private sector companies have also laid off employees. Some believe that jobs are being lost due to artificial intelligence (AI), while others believe that companies are taking this step due to business losses. In the corporate world, you often hear the term “Pink Slip” when an employee is fired. If you work in a corporate company, you’ve likely heard this term.
When an employee loses their job or the company decides to lay them off, it’s often said that they received a Pink Slip. But let’s explore its meaning and logic.
What does “Pink Slip” mean?
In common parlance, “Pink Slip” means that whenever a company fires an employee, it’s called a “Pink Slip.” Essentially, it means the company is terminating the employee’s position and services by firing them. In other words, a pink slip is an informal term for a termination notice. It’s not necessary to actually hand the employee a pink piece of paper. Nowadays, the term is mostly used as a catchphrase or corporate term.
What’s the logic behind the pink term?
It’s believed that American industrialist and business magnate Henry Ford used pink and white slips to dismiss or retain employees. Many companies now choose to issue a pink slip to formalize an employee’s termination. However, not all companies use this slip; only a few do. Under a pink slip, the employee may receive an email from HR, receive an official termination letter, or be informed of the termination in a meeting.
