The tittle-tattle of the Indian Premier League once again involves a mega-trade that will see one of the league’s most popular stars on the move. Just days after the stunning transfer of Rishabh Pant from the Lucknow Super Giants to the Delhi Capitals, the cricket world is already speculating over the next big name to be moved.
Hardik Pandya, the Mumbai Indians captain, is said to be the next big name to change teams, with the Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, and even Mumbai Indians’ rivals Lucknow Super Giants all circling like sharks. Despite several reports of secret trade proposals and denials from Mumbai’s management, there’s one place that looks set to sign India’s most valuable player.
The Suitors and the Stumbling Blocks For Hardik Pandya
The race for Hardik Pandya is less about the money than it is about the value of his tactical flexibility.
Chennai Super Kings have made their position on him clear; they have reportedly made a trade proposal of Shivam Dube, Dewald Brevis and ten crore cash to Mumbai.
However, Mumbai initially responded with a counter-offer of young batting sensation Ayush Mhatre, which Chennai was not interested in. In the financial game of the yellow army, it is easy to overlook the leadership conundrum. With Ruturaj Gaikwad as the captain and Sanju Samson as the vice-captain, there is no room for another leader in the CSK setup.
The Lucknow Super Giants have made a clear offer of twenty-five crore plus the captaincy, but it is a poor fit for both the player and the franchise. That leaves KKR.

Why Kolkata Makes Sense For Hardik Pandya
For Knight Riders, it is pure vindication. Not just for having won the first-ever title, but for the franchise also having faced a prolonged crisis since then, before finally choosing to replace the out-of-form skipper. Ajinkya Rahane’s retirement announcement means that they need to appoint a new leader at their earliest convenience, while also filling the massive void left behind by Andre Russell.
Hardik Pandya ticks all boxes. He not only offers the much-needed leadership but also has the power-hitting potential to fill the massive batting gap in the middle order for Kolkata. More importantly, he has been at Eden Gardens on multiple occasions, making him a natural fit compared to someone who has spent the majority of his time at Ekana or Chepauk. In fact, sources close to the business have revealed that the move to invite the all-rounder to join the eastern neighbours was even closer than one would think.
Even as the Mumbai Indians’ media mouthpiece said that formal talks were not in place and no discussions had happened so far, given the way IPL trade rumours work, the entire story is out in the open for the world to see.
With the trade window opening soon, it will be interesting to see the deal go through as Hardik Pandya will finally put on the purple jersey for the first time in his career, not for the money, but for the legacy as he searches for his next chapter in T20I history.
