Germany gave up two months ago. Now India is going to join the French-led sixth-generation fighter aircraft project Future Combat Air System (FCAS)! However, no final decision has been taken on the matter yet. It is said that the whole thing is in the discussion stage. It is believed that this sixth-generation fighter aircraft can be ready between 2028 and 2029.
FCAS is not just a fighter jet project. Its main goal is to create a future infrastructure where sixth-generation unmanned combat aircraft and artificial intelligence-based drones will work together. As a result, military operations will be conducted more efficiently. Last June, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with French President Emmanuel Macron in Nice, France. After that, a new chapter began in India-France defense cooperation, which has now been elevated to the level of a strategic partnership. In the meeting, the two leaders discussed various important issues including defense, joint development. Not only that, they also discussed next-generation technologies.
The FCAS project was launched in 2017 as a joint initiative between France and Germany. Later, Spain also joined it. But there was a long-standing disagreement between the French company Dassault Aviation and Germany’s Airbus over who would have control over the entire project. That conflict over work sharing, technology and leadership ultimately made the future of the project uncertain. But Germany finally pulled out of the project in June 2026. This is where India’s importance is increasing. India is already moving towards developing its own fifth-generation fighter aircraft. In addition, New Delhi is also looking to enter sixth-generation technology, increasing the importance of artificial intelligence and advanced unmanned aircraft in the future battlefield. On the other hand, France is also looking at India to develop unmanned fighter aircraft.
