According to the ‘Global Automaker Ratings 2025’ report by the ‘International Council on Clean Transportation’, Indian companies Tata Motors and Mahindra have emerged as the world’s most energy-efficient electric vehicle manufacturers, beating global tycoons like Tesla and BYD in this race.
The rating evaluated 22 major automakers from around the world. The report examined factors such as the companies’ transition to electric vehicles, EV sales, efforts to reduce carbon emissions in manufacturing, and the efficiency of battery electric vehicles.

Indian companies dominate energy efficiency
Tata Motors has secured the first position globally in terms of energy efficiency. According to ICCT, Tata Motors recorded a power consumption per kilometer of just 106 Wh/km (watt-hours per kilometer), which is the best among all manufacturers. Mahindra Automotive is at the second position in this list with 113 Wh/km.
While the global average is 131 Wh/km, Indian companies have recorded much lower power consumption compared to Tesla and BYD. Lower power consumption per kilometer means that these vehicles cover more distance on less power, which increases vehicle efficiency and reduces running costs for the customer. Tata Motors led the way with a better performance of 106 Wh/km compared to BYD’s 120 Wh/km.

Tata Motors’ growing expansion in the EV sector
Tata has expanded its portfolio by introducing new EV models in 2024. Along with this, Tata and its subsidiary ‘Jaguar Land Rover’ have started focusing on battery recycling in key markets.
