The long-running process of deciding the alignment for Haridwar Bypass (Phase-2) has been completed. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has sent the proposed alignment to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for final approval.
Under the project, a new bypass will be built from Chandidevi Temple Barrier to Nepali Farm. Most of the proposed route will pass through Rajaji Tiger Reserve. This area is extremely sensitive from forest and wildlife point of view. For about a year, discussions were going on to decide on such an alignment which would least affect the biodiversity.
An alignment was proposed
For this, the team of National Tiger Conservation Authority had also inspected. Rajaji Tiger Reserve officials along with NHAI inspected the spot to discuss various options. In this, help of experts from Wildlife Institute of India was also taken.
After discussion at the government level, an alignment has now been proposed. It is being claimed that this will have less impact. Rajaji Tiger Reserve Director Koko Rose said that some part of the proposed alignment belongs to Haridwar Forest Division, the rest belongs to the Tiger Reserve. Other aspects including minimizing the impact on biodiversity have been considered in the alignment.
