Commonwealth Games Day 5: Murali Sreeshankar, Sajan Prakash, Tejas Shirse qualify for final

India has begun Day 5 at the Commonwealth Games at Glasgow, Scotland on an encouraging note, with Murali Sreeshankar booking his berth for the final of the men’s long jump event with 8.01m in his first jump. He needed to breach the eight-metre mark during the qualifying round.

If the jumper from Kerala had failed to cross the qualification mark, he would have needed to finish in the top 12 after the completion of two groups in the qualification round to make it through to the final.

The 27-year-old long jumper won the silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, behind LaQuan Nairn from the Bahamas.

India’s Lokesh Sathyanathan also qualified for the long jump final, with a jump of 7.77m. He qualified with the seventh best distance.

Sajan Prakash qualified for the Men’s 200m Butterfly Final. He finished sixth overall in the heats with a timing of 1:58.59s and second in his heat.

Tejas Shirse qualified for the final of the 110m hurdles with a timing of 13.76s in the first heat.

Ghana’s Abdul Saminu stormed through Heat 2 in a season-best 10.01 seconds, the fastest 100m heat time in Commonwealth Games history.
