Main reason for toll reduction
Hitherto an oppressive rule was used to recover the huge cost of building large bridges, flyovers or tunnels on highways. Under this old structure, the toll was charged assuming 10 times the actual length of the bridge or tunnel. For example, if a flyover was 3 km long, then at the toll booth it would be treated as a 30 km road and charged accordingly. The government has now changed the rule to stop this big bhurdand. What is the new formula?
To provide financial relief to motorists, NHAI has now come up with two separate options for toll calculation. The biggest good news is that the option which reduces the toll amount will be considered as the final option and the same amount of toll will be charged from the motorists. NHAI New Rules
- Option A (Old Method) : (Length of Bridge/Tunnel × 10) + Remaining Normal Road Length.
- Option B (New Limit) : Total length of the entire highway project × 5.
The distance will be measured at the toll plaza by both these methods and whichever is the lower number, the toll for the same distance will be charged from the customer. NHAI New Rules

- Old System Toll: (30 km flyover × 10) + 10 km normal road = 310 kilometers Distance toll had to be paid.
- Tolls as per new system: The total length of 40 km will be directly multiplied by 5 (40 × 5) = 200 kilometers Distance toll will be fixed.

Full exemption from ’10 times’ rule for small bridges
In this new rule, not only the big flyovers are considered, but also the vehicles plying on the small bridges are given a lot of relief. Bridges with an overall length of 60 meters or less are completely excluded from the rule of assuming ’10 times the length’. When and where will this historical rule apply?
This rule will not be implemented at all the toll booths in the country at once, but it will be implemented in a phased manner.
- New Highway: Henceforth, this rule will be applicable on all new national highways and newly constructed toll plazas in the country from day one.
- Government Toll Plaza: At the existing toll booths, which are operated directly from the central government, this new reduction will be implemented at the time of the next annual toll hike.
- Private Toll Plaza: The new formula will apply to those highways being operated by private companies on a ‘build, operate and transfer’ (BOT) basis after their concession expires or the project is transferred back to the government. NHAI New Rules
