Patna. Two important national highway projects are set to advance to strengthen road transportation and connectivity in Bihar. These include the four-laning of the Muzaffarpur-Barauni NH-122 and the widening of NH-139 from Naubatpur to the Jharkhand border. These projects are also linked to the construction of the Eastern Bypass in Muzaffarpur.
About 102 km of road will be made four-lane.
A four-lane road is proposed for the approximately 102-kilometer stretch of the Muzaffarpur-Barauni NH-122. A detailed project report (DPR) has been prepared and sent to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) headquarters. The project is estimated to cost approximately ₹3,200 crore.
South Bihar to benefit from widening of NH-139
The second major project involves NH-139. The proposal calls for a four-lane road from Naubatpur to the Jharkhand border. This road plays a vital role in connecting Patna to major routes via Aurangabad, further towards Varanasi, Ranchi, and Kolkata.
Eastern bypass will reduce traffic jam in Muzaffarpur
The Muzaffarpur Eastern Bypass is also considered a key part of this larger road network plan. The bypass will reduce the need for heavy vehicles to travel through the city. This could reduce the pressure of trucks and other large vehicles on the city’s main roads.
Request for central approval
To move these road projects forward, Bihar’s Road Construction Minister, E. Kumar Shailendra, has requested Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari for necessary approvals. Now, the focus is on project approvals and further administrative procedures.
Many districts will get direct benefit
The impact of these two major road projects will not be limited to just one city or district. Road connectivity is expected to improve in areas of North and South Bihar, including Muzaffarpur, Barauni, Patna, and Aurangabad. Travel to and from Jharkhand is also expected to be easier for commuters and commercial vehicles.
