She told that when she decided to enter politics, her husband and veteran actor Dharmendra was not in favor of it. The reason for this was more concern about their safety than any political difference. In a recent interview, Hema Malini told that the huge crowd during the election campaign and the constant traveling by helicopter always troubled Dharmendra.

Hema Malini said that on behalf of the Bharatiya Janata Party, she was sent to different states for election campaign where thousands of people used to gather. Dharmendra was always worried after seeing such situations. He repeatedly advised them to stay safe and asked whether it was really necessary to take such a risk. During the election campaign, he used to be very worried even while traveling continuously from one place to another by helicopter. However, Hema Malini says that due to the responsibility of the party, she had to fulfill her responsibility.

He said that his inclination towards politics started during the 1999 Lok Sabha elections when he campaigned for actor and BJP leader Vinod Khanna. During that time, for the first time he saw the support and affection of such a large number of people. He said that whenever huge crowds gathered in election meetings, he could not believe that so many people had come to see and hear him. This love of people was a very emotional and inspiring experience for him.

Hema Malini also told that initially she did not accept the offer to enter politics. But his mother explained to him that now the time has come to contribute to the country as well instead of limiting himself to acting only. His mother told him that BJP has big and respected leaders like Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Lal Krishna Advani and this opportunity can become a medium to serve the country. The actress shared another interesting incident related to her first election. She told that she had put a clear condition before the party that if she contests the elections, she will contest only from Mathura Lok Sabha seat because she is an ardent devotee of Lord Shri Krishna and has a special spiritual connection with Mathura. Later the party honored his wish and made him its candidate from Mathura. During this period, he also remembered the support of late leaders Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley and expressed his gratitude towards them.
