Mumbai: Indian stock markets opened on a cautious note on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, amid mixed global cues and uncertainty over geopolitical developments. The benchmark indices witnessed limited movement as investors remained cautious ahead of key economic data and global market trends.
The 30-share BSE Sensex opened with a gain of 109.08 points or 0.13%, reaching 78,263.33. Meanwhile, the Nifty 50 remained almost flat, rising just 0.75 points to open at 24,472.45.
In the previous trading session, the Sensex had closed at 78,154.25, while the Nifty settled at 24,471.70.
Banking and IT Stocks Support Market Movement
Early trading activity remained mixed, with buying interest visible in select banking and technology stocks. From the Sensex pack, State Bank of India (SBI), Tech Mahindra, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank and HCL Technologies emerged among the early gainers.
SBI shares led the gains, rising around 1.42% during early trade. However, several major stocks faced selling pressure. Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), Kotak Mahindra Bank, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), Titan and Bajaj Finance were among the top losers. M&M shares declined over 1.43% in early trading.
Godrej Consumer Shares Hit Lower Circuit After CEO Exit
The biggest market movement was seen in Godrej Consumer Products, whose shares plunged nearly 10% and hit the lower circuit during early trading.
The sharp fall came after the resignation of Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Sudhir Sitapati. The leadership change triggered investor concerns, leading to heavy selling pressure in the stock.
Market Breadth Remains Mixed
The broader market showed a mixed trend in early trade. On the National Stock Exchange (NSE), 1,312 stocks were trading lower, while 1,557 stocks advanced. Around 110 stocks remained unchanged.
The BSE SmallCap Select Index gained 52.74 points or 0.58% to trade at 9,167.53, while the BSE MidCap Select Index remained almost unchanged.
Global Cues Keep Investors Cautious
Asian markets traded mixed on Wednesday as investors tracked movements in US equities, crude oil prices and geopolitical developments.
Japan's Nikkei 225 gained 444.78 points or 0.66% to trade at 67,415. Hong Kong's Hang Seng declined 290.82 points or 1.15%, while South Korea's Kospi remained positive.
Shanghai's SSE Composite index also traded higher, gaining around 0.32%.
