Indian singer Sonu Nigam had explained his decision to stay away from comments on the NEET protests after a video of his reaction during a media interaction had gained attention online.
In July, a video had circulated on social media where Sonu was asked about the student protests. The singer had appeared uncomfortable with the question and had responded, “Abhi ho gaya bas,” while moving away from the discussion.
The reaction had led to discussions among social media users, with some questioning his silence on the issue. Later, Sonu had shared his reason for not commenting on the matter during an interview with Bombay Times.
The Sandesh has come singer had said that every discussion had its own suitable time and place. He had explained that he followed the practice of staying focused on the purpose of an event.
“In the last three decades of being in Mumbai, I have learnt one basic etiquette for any press conference. Always adhere to the agenda of the occasion and do not let conversation wander to disconnected matters,” Sonu had said.
He had added that he was attending an event related to his tribute to late singer Pankaj Udhas and felt that discussing another topic there was not appropriate.
“Discussing politics when you have come to talk about your tribute to your guru Pankaj Udhas is disrespectful in my eyes,” he had said.
Sonu had also mentioned a personal rule about speaking on issues. He had said, “I have also promised my father that I will not comment on anything that I’m not knowledgeable about.”
The my singer had further stated that he had previously spoken about several issues during his career. He had mentioned topics including loudspeakers at religious places and royalty rights for performers.
“I have taken enough stands throughout my life and have been instrumental in bringing many changes in the system,” he had said.
The earlier video had received mixed reactions online, with some users criticising his response while others supported his decision to avoid commenting without complete knowledge of the matter.
