Veg vs Nonveg: Which Diet is Better?

Debate on veg and non-veg

The debate between veg and non-veg is seen in every family. Some people believe that vegetarianism increases lifespan, while others say that non-vegetarian food provides better protein. A recent study has shed new light on this topic.

New research raises new aspects of the debate

A study conducted in China on elderly people over the age of 80 found that those who adopted a completely vegetarian diet may be less likely to live to the age of 100 than those who ate non-vegetarian diets. The study included 5203 people who were 80 years of age or older in 1998. During follow-up in 2018, it was observed that vegetarians were about 19 percent less likely to become centenarians, while among vegans this reduction reached about 29 percent.

The difference is greater among the elderly who are underweight.

It is worth noting that this difference was particularly pronounced in the elderly who were underweight (BMI less than 18.5). No significant difference was found between normal or overweight people. The age of those on pesco or ovo-lacto vegetarian diets consuming fish or egg-milk was not significantly different from those on nonvegetarian diets.

Benefits of Vegetarian Diet

Many studies have also shown the benefits of a vegetarian diet. Due to the fiber, antioxidants and low saturated fat in it, the risk of heart diseases, type 2 diabetes and some types of cancer is reduced. Apart from this, weight also generally remains under control. However, as we age, the body has a greater need for high-quality protein, vitamin B12 and other nutrients, which are not always available from a plant-based diet alone.

Importance of balanced diet

Experts believe that a balanced diet is more beneficial rather than a completely vegetarian or non-vegetarian diet. Non-veg eaters should choose low-fat meat and increase their intake of vegetables and fruits. At the same time, vegetarian people should take good sources of protein like pulses, soya, nuts and supplements if necessary.

Take care of individual needs

The nutritional needs of every person vary according to his age, health and activities. Therefore, it is essential to consult a doctor or nutritionist before making any major changes. Not only diet, but also staying active, getting good sleep and reducing stress are important for a long and healthy life. This study is based on only one age group and one country, and further research will clarify the situation. Until then, a balanced diet seems to be the best option.
