A cricket coach was murdered in Sri Lanka. Sumit Fernando, who was coaching a cricket club in Colombo, had a fight with his own players after which he died in the hospital. The coach was 62 years old and had coached many players including Sri Lanka’s ODI captain Kusal Mendis. Fernando, a former coach of Prince of Wales College in Moratuwa, was at the Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club on August 8, where he had an argument with the players over water. After this the players misbehaved with him and allegedly he was even beaten. After which he was admitted to the hospital and then he lost his life. The coach was cremated on Thursday.
Accused cricketer arrested
On Monday, the police arrested the 17-year-old cricketer related to this incident. After being produced before the Colombo Magistrate Court on 11 August, the boy was ordered to remain under the supervision of the Child Care Services Department until 17 August. According to police investigation, a group of cricketers taking training at Bloomfield Club went to drink water but there was no water coming from the tap. After this an argument broke out between the players and club coach Sumit Fernando. Police said that during the clash, Fernando allegedly tried to attack a player, after which the 17-year-old player beat him, and the coach died in the hospital.

However, the investigation into the death of the coach is still going on. Medical records showed that Fernando already had heart disease. The officials have got his body examined.
