New Delhi. Former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Nirmal Ghosh has been arrested for hastily cremating the body of a junior resident doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College. Police have arrested the former MLA from Sambalpur, Odisha. An FIR was registered against Nirmal Ghosh, Panihati Municipality councilor Somnath Dey and Sanjeev Mukherjee, a neighbor of the victim's family, in the investigation into the alleged irregularities related to the last rites of a trainee female doctor.

According to the police, the body of the trainee doctor was taken to a cremation ground in Panihati where two other bodies were to be cremated first but the doctor was cremated before them. Not only this, the documents related to consent for cremation were signed by the neighbors instead of the parents or any family member of the deceased. The father of the deceased had lodged a complaint with the police in which he had alleged that Nirmal Ghosh had cremated his daughter without our consent with the aim of destroying the evidence. The victim's father had also said in his complaint to the police that he had demanded re-postmortem of his daughter's body so that some more information could come out, but his demand was not accepted, allegedly due to political influence.

Recently, on August 9, on the second death anniversary of the trainee doctor, West Bengal Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari had ordered the police to register a new case and investigate. After which this action has been taken. After the arrest of Ghosh, it is now expected that TMC leader Somnath Dey and Sanjeev Mukherjee, a neighbor of the victim's family, may also be arrested soon.
