Chamoli Tunnel Tragedy: Another Worker's Body Found, Death Toll Rises To 8

Chamoli Tunnel Tragedy : After the accident in the THDC under-construction tunnel at Chamoli’s Mayapur (Pipalkoti) on August 13, rescue operations are on war footing. The body of one more worker was recovered from the tunnel on Saturday, taking the death toll to eight. So far 14 workers have been safely pulled out of the tunnel, while two are still missing. An intensive search operation is underway inside the tunnel to find the missing workers.

During the rescue operation today, Devanath, son of Dhansuram Baghel, a resident of Dahikonga, Chhattisgarh, was pulled out of the tunnel. He was immediately rushed to the district hospital in Gopeshwar, where doctors declared him brought dead. The water accumulated in the tunnel is also being continuously disposed of. After the water level receded, suction pumps and other equipment are being used to move rescue teams and reach the missing workers.

Search continues for missing workers

Teams from District Administration, Police, SDRF, NDRF and concerned departments are engaged in relief and rescue operations. Efforts are being made to speed up operations by using available resources and equipment at the scene. Meanwhile, the administration has prioritized the search for the two missing workers and directed to conduct search operations in as many places as possible.

Indeed, rescue operations are underway after the Chamoli Pipalkoti tunnel accident. So far eight workers have died in this accident. The dead include three from Uttar Pradesh, two from Uttarakhand and three from Chhattisgarh.

Another worker’s body was found

Twelve workers have been rescued safely. Of these, 11 workers are undergoing treatment in hospital, while one has been discharged. Two workers are still missing and the search is on. Laxmikant Bijlwan, in-charge of Pipalkoti Chowki, said that the body of one of the three workers who went missing in the tunnel accident was found today. The deceased has been identified as Devnath Putra Dhansu Ram Baghel, a resident of Dahigonda village in Chhattisgarh.
