New Delhi. Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO)'s first solar mission Aditya-L1 has revealed one of the biggest and most complicated mysteries related to the Sun. Scientists at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) discovered why the Sun's outer part, i.e. the corona, remains millions of times hotter than its surface and how it retains its coolness or energy even after losing huge amounts of energy during solar storms.

Use of data from visible emission line on Aditya-L1
Data from the Visible Emission Line Coronagraph on board Aditya-L1 were used to study a powerful solar eruption that occurred on 5 August 2024. It was found that surface waves contribute only seven percent of the total energy requirement of the corona. At the same time, the main source of remaining 93 percent energy is the reconnection of magnetic field lines. These lines regained their position and replenished energy within about 10 hours after the explosion.
