Jawai Dam is a major water project located in Pali district of Rajasthan. This dam is very important for western Rajasthan from the point of view of irrigation and water management. Due to its location between the Aravalli hills and the natural rocky area, Jawai Dam has today made its mark as a popular tourist destination.
Jawai Dam is constructed on Jawai River. Its construction started during the time of the then Jodhpur princely state and the project was completed in the year 1957. The main objective of building the dam was to improve irrigation and water availability in the area. During monsoon, water coming from Jawai River and surrounding catchment areas is stored in the dam reservoir.
very important for poly
The water of Jawai Dam plays an important role in the drinking water and irrigation system of Pali and surrounding areas. The importance of such reservoirs increases due to irregular rainfall in western Rajasthan. Adequate water storage in the dam during a good monsoon provides relief from water crisis in the surrounding areas.
The reservoir of Jawai Dam and the surrounding hills have created a different kind of natural environment here. This is why in the last few years this area has become increasingly popular for wildlife and nature tourism.
Jawai famous for leopards
The most special identity of Jawai region is the leopards found here. The natural habitat of leopards is in the granite rocks and mountain caves of Jawai. Here a unique co-existence has been seen between the local rural community and wildlife for a long time.
A large number of migratory birds also arrive around Jawai Reservoir during the winter season. Reservoirs, hills and wildlife together make it one of the major natural tourist destinations of Rajasthan.
Hope for water in dry area
Jawai Dam reflects the challenge of western Rajasthan, where better management of water resources is essential despite limited rainfall. The dam has long supported agriculture and drinking water systems in the Pali region.
Today Jawai Dam is not just a water project but has become an important center of water security, natural heritage and tourism of Pali. Its lakes, Aravalli hills and the unique world of leopards give a distinct identity to the natural diversity of Rajasthan.
