A 24-year-old sanitation worker employed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) was stabbed to death while performing his duties in the Kalyanpuri area on Sunday morning, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Anil Kumarwho was working in the area around 7 am when he was allegedly attacked with a knife. The assailant fled the spot after the attack and remains at large.
Police teams are examining CCTV footage and other evidence to identify and trace the accused. Multiple teams have reportedly been deployed in connection with the investigation.
CCTV footage purportedly shows the accused approaching Anil and attacking him with a knife while he was carrying out his sanitation duties.
BJP Trilokpuri MLA Ravi Kant visited the spot and expressed condolences to the victim's family. Speaking to IANS, he described the incident as “deeply tragic” and said sanitation workers perform essential duties while much of the city is asleep.
“I have seen the CCTV footage. Anil was doing his job when the accused suddenly approached and attacked him,” Kant said, adding that the accused had been identified and would face strict action.
AAP Kondli MLA Kuldeep Kumar also condemned the killing and questioned the law-and-order situation in Kalyanpuri and Delhi.
He highlighted the difficult circumstances faced by sanitation workers and demanded strong action against the accused. Kumar also called for compensation for Anil's family and a government job for one of his family members.
The AAP MLA additionally demanded an encounter with the accused, saying it would “set a precedent” and deter similar crimes.
Police are continuing their investigation to establish the circumstances and motive behind the killing.
