Patna. The government has taken many important decisions for the farmers of Bihar. The government has taken three major steps towards reducing the risks associated with farming, expanding banking facilities in rural areas and strengthening the grain storage system. These include implementing the Prime Minister Crop Insurance Scheme, increasing the facility of micro-ATMs through cooperative societies and construction of large warehouses in the societies.
Prime Minister Crop Insurance Scheme will be implemented from Rabi season
The state government has approved the implementation of Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana in Bihar from the Rabi season of the financial year 2026-27. The objective of this scheme is to provide financial security to farmers in case of crop damage due to natural disaster or other reasons.
Under the scheme, there will be a provision to provide compensation to the farmers according to their agricultural costs. The special thing is that farmers will have to pay relatively low premium for insurance, while the central and state governments will also bear their share in the cost of the premium. Cabinet approval will be taken for the final decision on how much premium will be charged from farmers.
Micro-ATM will increase banking facilities in villages
The government is also working on increasing the reach of banking services in rural areas. Under the Sahakar programme, 186 milk cooperative societies, 618 PACS, 19 primary vegetable producer cooperative societies and seven other cooperative institutions will be developed as Bank Mitras.
Micro-ATM facility will be made available at these institutions. This will reduce the dependence of rural people on distant bank branches for many small banking related tasks. The process of opening bank accounts of cooperative societies and their members will also be taken forward by running a special campaign.
Big grain warehouses will be built in 36 committees
The third major initiative for farmers and cooperative societies is related to food storage. Under the food storage scheme, warehouses of different capacities are being constructed in 36 committees of the state. The capacity of these warehouses will be 1000, 2000 and 2500 tonnes. This will increase the capacity to preserve grains at the local level and create better infrastructure for crop storage.
