Dawood's former associate Akhtar Merchant arrested in Delhi, links related to drugs-weapons smuggling

Mumbai's wanted criminal Akhtar Merchant has been detained from Delhi Airport. Akhtar's name has been surfacing as a former associate of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. Many serious criminal cases like attempt to murder, extortion, criminal conspiracy and possession of illegal weapons are registered against him. Interpol had also issued a Red Corner Notice against him.

Serious allegations are recorded in Interpol records

According to Interpol records, Akhtar Merchant was born on 4 September 1965 in Mumbai and is an Indian citizen. Cases are registered against him under sections 307, 384, 120B and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.

These sections include charges like attempt to murder, extortion, criminal conspiracy and committing crimes with common intention. Apart from this, cases are also registered against him under the Arms Act, which include charges related to possession of illegal arms and ammunition.

Name also linked to drugs and arms smuggling

Akhtar Merchant's name has also surfaced in cases related to alleged smuggling of drugs and weapons. Action has also been taken against him under Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA). This law is applied in cases involving organized crime and criminal gangs.

Maharashtra ATS had arrested in 2022

Akhtar Merchant was arrested by Maharashtra ATS in 2022. Now, after being detained at Delhi Airport, the concerned agencies are taking further legal action on the basis of old cases registered against him and Interpol notice.

Due to Akhtar's old connection with Dawood Ibrahim, his name has also been coming up in cases related to Mumbai underworld. After the detention at Delhi airport, everyone's eyes are now on the action of the investigating agencies.
