Lisa Kudrow played one of the most famous characters in sitcom history when she became Phoebe Buffay on Friends.

The actress shared that despite playing a famous role, she missed out on other shows because she was not considered “gorgeous”.

Speaking on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, she said she got snubbed because casting directors wanted something else.

“I didn’t look like women who were getting cast as series regulars on sitcoms.” Lisa shared.

As per Lisa, the directors wanted a look that was “very pretty and appealing”.

“I was told, ‘It’s very hard because you’re not gorgeous, and they want gorgeous.’”

She added “I don’t think that’s ridiculous. I got it. Also, it’s not just how you look; it’s how you act, too. I’m not ‘cute.’ And God, I didn’t want to be cute.”

The actress admitted she pushed to play Rachel on the show, that was eventually played by Jennifer Aniston.

“They (later) went, ‘No, no. It’s so hard for them to find Phoebe. They’re not messing with that.’” she recalled being turned down for Rachel, “So that was the sweet way of saying, ‘Yeah, you are not the romantic interest.’”
