Sarathkumar announced the decision during a debate on his department's grant demands in the Legislative Assembly.
365 days instead of 12 weeks for third child
As per the current rules, married regular female government employees with less than two surviving children are entitled to 365 days of maternity leave. However, female employees with two or more surviving children were entitled to only 12 weeks leave for the third child. The proportion of elderly population is also increasing in the state. About 16 percent of the population is above 60 years of age, the health minister said. Hence, the future population structure and public health system are likely to be affected.
Thinking of encouraging a third child?
Considering the declining fertility rate in Tamil Nadu, measures to encourage a third child are also being discussed. Health Minister K. G. Speaking at an event in South India, Arunraj had said that population change is a major challenge to public health.
Some states are considering third-child incentive policies. Hence, the decision of 365 days maternity leave for the third child in Tamil Nadu is considered important not only in terms of employee welfare, but also in view of the changing demographics of the state.
