Big upset in WTC Table! Team India's path to the final became easier after defeating Sri Lanka.

New Delhi: The Indian team has made a strong comeback in the World Test Championship 2025-27 by defeating Sri Lanka by 165 runs in the Galle Test. With this win, India took a 1-0 lead in the 2-match series and also jumped into the WTC points table.

Padikkal's century, Suthar's blast with 10 wickets   

Captain Shubman Gill's decision to bat first after winning the toss proved correct. Devdutt Padikkal, who came at number three, scored the first century of his Test career and played a brilliant inning of 167 runs. India scored 462 runs in the first innings.

In reply, Sri Lanka collapsed for 284 runs. India got a big lead of 178 runs. In the second innings, India played aggressively and set a target of 372 runs. During this, Rishabh Pant scored a stormy half-century and also became the fastest batsman to hit 100 Test sixes.

Sri Lanka's second innings could not withstand Indian spin. Manav Suthar took 4 wickets in the first innings and 6 wickets in the second and took a total of 10 wickets in the match. Sri Lanka was all out for 206 runs and India won the match.

India ranked 5th in WTC 2025-27 table   

With this victory, India got a big advantage in the WTC table. India has 64 points in 10 matches with 5 wins, 4 losses and 1 draw. PCT i.e. percentage has become 53.33 and the team has reached number 5. At the same time, Sri Lanka has suffered a shock after the defeat. With just 1 win from 5 matches, Sri Lanka has slipped to 6th position with 20 points and 33.33% PCT.

Who's where at the table? Australia still on top   

Australia remains at number 1 in ICC's latest WTC rankings. With 7 wins from 9 matches, they have 84 points and 77.77% PCT.

  • South Africa is at number two. They have 36 points and 75.00% PCT with 3 wins from 4 matches.
  • New Zealand on third – 6 matches, 4 wins, 52 points, 72.22% PCT
  • Bangladesh at fourth – 5 matches, 3 wins, 28 points, 66.67% PCT

Talking about the lower part of the table, England is at 7th position with 38 points and 24.36% PCT with 4 wins in 13 matches. Pakistan is at 8th position with 6 matches, 2 wins, 16 points, 22.22% PCT and West Indies is at last 9th position with 12 matches, 2 wins, 30 points, 20.83% PCT.

Onward Schedule: Colombo to New Zealand  

The second and last Test between India and Sri Lanka will be played at the SSC Ground in Colombo from 23 August. After that Team India will play a 2 test series in New Zealand.

This WTC cycle will end with the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia at home next year. After the victory in Galle, the path to reach the final has become a little easier for India, but every match ahead is important now.
