Portugal recently passed a bill banning the veil. According to this bill, no woman in that country can wear a veil in public. Popular writer Taslima Nasrin welcomed this decision of the Portuguese government. He said, “Veil and niqab should be banned all over the world.”
Taslima made a post on social media on Tuesday. There, he writes, 'Portugal's parliament has banned veils, niqabs, and face-covering clothing in public. I welcome this decision. I want veil and niqab to be banned everywhere in the world. The veil is not a symbol of religious freedom to me. It is a symbol of patriarchal control imposed on women. Cover the woman's body, cover her hair, cover her face – finally cover her as if she has no face. No identity. No personality.' He further said, “A man will be allowed to appear in front of the world as a human being. And a woman must remain invisible behind clothes – how long will this discrimination continue? Women are not an object of shame. A woman's face is not forbidden, her hair is not forbidden, her body is not forbidden. Stop the bad culture of making women invisible. Farewell to the world of burkha-niqab.”
It should be noted that last Friday the parliament of Portugal passed the veil ban bill. The bill states that burqas cannot be worn in public except in airplanes, diplomatic buildings such as embassies and places of worship. Violation of the law can result in a fine of up to 4,000 Euros (Tk. 4 lakh in Indian currency). In addition, forcing someone to wear a burqa can be punished with a maximum of three years in that bill. According to sources, the bill has already been sent to the President to be passed into law.
