Three children, including two brothers, drowned in a rainwater-filled pit near Mogra Road in Ichhawar, Sehore district, on Wednesday afternoon, police said.
The incident occurred around 1 pm when the children, who had reportedly gone to the area to play, entered the water to bathe. They were unable to get out as the pit was deep and filled with rainwater.
The deceased have been identified as 12-year-old Prashant, his 10-year-old brother Prithviraj, and 11-year-old Dikshant. Prashant and Prithviraj were sons of Subhal Bagri, while Dikshant was the son of Akhilesh Bagri. All three children were residents of Ward No. 12 in Ichhawar.
The incident came to light after local residents spotted the children's bodies floating in the water and alerted the authorities. Additional Superintendent of Police Prashant Choubey said relatives subsequently informed the police about the incident.
“When the police reached the spot, they found three children of different age groups. The pothole on Mogra Road was full of water. The children were unable to control themselves because of the water's depth. All three died in the accident,” Choubey told IANS.
A police team recovered the bodies and sent them to a hospital for post-mortem examination.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths, including the condition of the pit and whether any negligence contributed to the tragedy.
“We will investigate the incident from various angles. If any negligence or lapse is found, we will investigate that aspect as well,” Choubey said.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety risks posed by open and water-filled construction pits during the monsoon, particularly in areas accessible to children.
