Emphasis on Make in India and relations in India-Japan defense talks!

Japan's Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi reached India on Wednesday. On the first day of his official visit here, Japan's Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi visited the Western Naval Command in Mumbai on August 19. During this, he interacted with Naval Chief Admiral Krishna Swaminathan and Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan.

After this, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will now hold a bilateral meeting with Japan's Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi in New Delhi on August 20.

It is noteworthy that this is the first visit of Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi to India. In the meeting of the two leaders, there is likely to be a wide-ranging discussion on measures to further strengthen India-Japan defense relations, enhance strategic trust and promote peace, stability and security in the Indo-Pacific region.

During the meeting, both the Defense Ministers will discuss ways to further strengthen maritime security cooperation and increase cooperation in the field of defense equipment and technology under 'Make in India'.

New opportunities for defense industrial cooperation between the two countries are also expected to be discussed after Japan amended its three principles related to transfer of defense equipment and technology. The meeting is likely to identify further action plans and new areas of cooperation to take the defense and security cooperation between the two countries to the next level.

The Japanese Defense Minister and his delegation were given a detailed briefing on the roles, responsibilities and operational capabilities of the Indian Navy during their visit to the Western Naval Command on Wednesday. Shinjiro Koizumi inspected the guard of honor upon arrival at Western Naval Command.

Earlier, he paid floral tributes at the Gaurav Stambh located in the Naval Dockyard. The Japanese Defense Minister also visited the Indian Navy's indigenous warship INS Chennai. This visit is considered important towards acquainting the Japanese delegation with India's indigenous defense manufacturing capability and maritime power.

India and Japan have a common vision of making the Indo-Pacific region free, open, resilient and prosperous. Both the countries are continuously strengthening their relations in many areas including maritime security, defense cooperation, military training and defense technology.

The two-day visit of the Japanese Defense Minister to India reflects the momentum of the growing defense partnership between the two countries. The visit comes at a time when India and Japan are pushing to further expand mutual defense and security cooperation amid the changing security circumstances in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Japanese Defense Minister's visit to India comes a few weeks after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's visit to Delhi. Prime Minister Takaichi participated in the annual summit meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. During this, both the countries had agreed to further deepen defense and security cooperation.

Now the visit of Japan's Defense Minister to India is being considered an important step towards taking that consensus forward. The talks between Rajnath Singh and Shinjiro Koizumi on August 20 are likely to focus specifically on issues such as maritime security, cooperation in defense equipment and technology, indigenous defense production, partnership between defense industries and security of the Indo-Pacific region.

The growing defense cooperation between India and Japan is becoming an important foundation of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries. There is also a possibility of opening new avenues of cooperation for India in the field of Japanese defense technology and equipment after the change in Japan's defense equipment and technology transfer policy.
