Nearly a month after the protests by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), Jantar Mantar has once again become the center of protests. This time the protesters reached Delhi on Friday morning demanding end of caste-based reservation. There was a standoff between the protesters gathered under the banner of “Remove Reservation Movement” and the Delhi Police over the protest site.
Protestors not ready to move from Jantar Mantar
Abhishek Agnihotri, one of the organisers, told The Indian Express that the protesters would stage the stage at Jantar Mantar only and would not go to any other place. According to him, the number of protesters is continuously increasing since morning.
Abhishek Agnihotri and Harsh Dubey told that they are running 'Reservation Reform Movement', the objective of which is to raise the demand to end the caste-based reservation system in the country.
Delhi Police gave option of Ramlila Maidan
Delhi Police suggested the protesters to go to Ramlila Maidan instead of Jantar Mantar. Later, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central Delhi issued a letter to the organizers giving permission for the demonstration at Ramlila Maidan. The police did not object to the peaceful demonstration of a maximum of 500 protesters in terms of law and order. This permission was for till 4 pm. However, the protesters refused to vacate Jantar Mantar.
Prohibitory order is in force under section 163
Delhi Police on Thursday had refuted the rumors going on on social media regarding permission to protest at Jantar Mantar. According to the police, no demonstration has been allowed at Jantar Mantar due to prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS in New Delhi district. Police also appealed to citizens not to share or disseminate unverified information and said legal action could be taken against those spreading fake news.
Attention increased after CJP demonstration
Jantar Mantar and Ramlila Maidan are about three kilometers apart, but both fall in different police districts. Earlier, during the CJP demonstration, the same group had announced to start a movement against the reservation system. Friday's incidents have once again intensified the debate regarding reservation, protests and law and order.
