Big Ban Capital investment in EV segment: Talks on ₹2,850 crore investment deal in JBM Auto

Automobile Desk – A big investment deal is coming in India's Electric Vehicle (EV) sector. American private equity firm Bain Capital is in talks to invest about $ 300 million (ie about ₹ 2,850 crore) in the EV business of JBM Auto. If the deal is finalized, Bain Capital may get a large minority stake in JBM's EV unit.

According to market sources, discussions are going on between the two companies regarding valuation, stake and deal structure. Bain Capital is also considering the option of taking joint control in this venture. This funding will significantly help JBM Auto in expanding its electric mobility infrastructure and production capacity. The company was earlier primarily focused on auto components, but is now strengthening its base in the fast-growing EV bus market.

JBM Auto is currently leading in the electric bus segment of the country. The company has a market share of around 79% in the tarmac electric bus market, while it has over 50% market share in the intercity electric luxury coach space. JBM's integrated EV bus factory located in Delhi-NCR is counted among the largest units outside China. In the first half of the year 2026, 804 electric buses of JBM Group have been registered.

According to the financial data, JBM Group is working on a revenue target of ₹7,000 to ₹7,500 crore in the current financial year. The EV division alone can contribute about 45% to this. JBM's EV arm's revenue grew 16% to ₹2,307 crore in FY26, which was 38% of the company's total sales. In the March quarter, the segment's revenue grew 11.4% year-on-year to ₹831 crore and net profit increased 44.5% to ₹106 crore. The company has a solid order backlog of over 9,000 electric buses for the next 30 months.

JBM Auto has not limited itself to bus manufacturing, but is creating the entire EV ecosystem. The company's bus manufacturing unit comes under 'JBM Electric Vehicles', which has an annual capacity of 20,000 buses. JBM Auto has 85% stake in this unit. Additionally, the battery packaging and components business is managed by 'JBM Green Energy', with an annual battery capacity of 6 GWh. Apart from e-buses, this battery capacity is also being used in two-wheelers, three-wheelers, LCVs and energy storage systems.

JBM is also expanding rapidly in global markets. The company is continuously growing in Europe, Gulf countries, Africa, Singapore and Asia-Pacific markets. To meet the needs of Europe, a regional headquarters has been set up in Frankfurt and left-hand drive electric buses have been manufactured. JBM has also entered into strategic partnerships with global tech firms like Hitachi ZeroCarbon to improve fleet analytics and battery life.
