Delhi. Congress has said that due to the wrong policies of the Modi government, inflation has broken the back of the common man and the household budget of the middle class has completely deteriorated. In a statement issued here on Saturday, the party said that prices of everyday items like soap, detergent, toothpaste and biscuits to essential commodities like flour, rice, spices, edible oil and sugar are continuously increasing.
Everyday things became expensive
According to the party, in the last one month the price of flour has increased from Rs 32 to Rs 40 and that of rice from Rs 42 to Rs 54 per kg. The price of cumin has increased from Rs 180 to Rs 380, turmeric from Rs 130 to Rs 260, mustard oil from Rs 165 to Rs 200, groundnut oil from Rs 170 to Rs 230 and refined oil from Rs 130 to Rs 190 per kg. Sugar has also become expensive by about 40 percent in two months.
Congress President raised questions on sugar imports
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said on social media that why sugar stocks in India, the world's largest sugar producer and exporter, are at a nine-year low and why the situation has reached the point of stopping sugar exports and importing 10 lakh tonnes of sugar duty-free. He said that sugar has become expensive by about 40 percent in three months. Who is responsible for this inflationary burden on the public before the festivals?
He questioned that when there is a shortage of sugar in the country and the government is importing sugar from abroad, then why the policy of using sugarcane and grains to make ethanol for E-20 is not being reviewed. Jairam Ramesh, in-charge of the party's communication department, said that the impact of inflation is visible from soap to cars, from spices to flour, rice, sugar and oil. He alleged that due to the wrong policies of the Modi government, the general public is being crushed in the mill of inflation and the government is not taking any effective steps to control the rising inflation.
