Gorakhpur. A case of threatening to kill a Gram Panchayat officer over phone has come to light in Bhathat development block of Gorakhpur district in Uttar Pradesh. The accused went against the rules and pressurized him to remove his niece's name from the government records. He also warned the officer of dire consequences if he did not do so. On the complaint of the victim officer, the police have registered a case and started investigation.

Pressure to remove name due to land dispute
According to information received from sources, Ganga Sagar Singh, resident of Maulakhor village, is having a dispute in the court with his niece Guddi Devi regarding ancestral land. Guddi's father died in 2009. Accused Ganga Sagar has claimed that his niece's name after marriage is not recorded in the current family register, hence he wanted to get her name completely removed from the old records also. Due to which his claim on the land may be weakened.
The officer refused citing rules
The Gram Panchayat Officer there, Abdus Salam, citing the rules, refused to make any kind of illegal manipulation in the government documents. Angered by this, accused Ganga Sagar Singh called the officer on his mobile phone on the night of August 19 and threatened using abusive language, “Remove niece's name, otherwise I will kill you.” After this, the next morning on August 20, the accused called again and threatened to kill the officer if he came to the area. The call recording of these two threats of the accused is safe with the victim officer.

Police registered FIR
Frightened by the serial threats, Gram Panchayat Officer Abdus Salam informed about this at Pipraich police station, pleading for his safety. Taking immediate action in this case, the police have registered an FIR against the accused Ganga Sagar Singh under relevant sections. Sub-Inspector Sunil Kumar Yadav is investigating this case. The officer has also informed the District Magistrate (DM), District Panchayat Raj Officer (DPRO) and Block Development Officer (BDO) in writing about his safety. The police administration says that legal action is being taken against the accused on the basis of the evidence of the call recording.
