Indian Railway : New Record of Indian Railways; A record transport of 360 containers in a journey of 422 km

  • The train reached Vadodara after traveling 422 km.
  • As many as 360 containers were transported in a single round.
  • It will help in reducing pollution along with saving time and cost.

Indian Railwayshas successfully operated the first double-stank log-haul container train in a historic feat in freight transport. The train departed from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) Mumbai at 7 PM on Friday, August 21. Covering a distance of about 422 km, the train reached Concor's GCT terminal at Varanama in Vadodara division carrying 360 TEU containers. This is the first time that such a large number of containers are being transported in a single train. According to the railway administration, this long-haul train was constructed by connecting two separate double-stank rakes.

The first rake was from JNPT to Vadodara with a load of 45+1, loco number 60311 and gross weight of 1,817 tonnes. The second rake also on the JNPT to Vadodara route had a load of 45-1, loco number 24690 and a weight of 2,105 tonnes. Both rakes together transported 360 containers with a weight of 3,922 tonnes. Railway officials said that this made it possible to transport large quantities of goods at the same time.

Faster transportation, cost saving too

This new experiment will have many benefits. The biggest benefit is that congestion at ports and terminals will be reduced. Moving more containers at a time will reduce the dwell time of containers and enable faster transportation. Also the overall transit time will be reduced due to better utilization of route capacity. This will lead to faster movement of goods from important ports like JNPT and also reduce transportation costs.

Green and sustainable transport gained strength

  • As the entire train runs on electricity, Indian Railways' green and sustainable freight policy has gained strength.
  • It would take hundreds of trucks to transport 360 containers across the road, leading to huge increases in diesel consumption, road congestion, vehicular pollution and carbon emissions.
  • This one round of railways will help in reducing pollution by saving fuel.
  • It is believed that due to this success of Indian Railways, the logistics sector in the country will get a new momentum.
