Tezzbuzz Desk- The case of recovery of about 10 kg gold biscuits in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh has now taken a political colour. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has made serious allegations against the UP Police and the BJP government through social media posts. He sarcastically wrote, “Showed 10, swallowed 16… The illusion of BJP's police.” Akhilesh claims that the police had allegedly recovered 26 gold biscuits, but only 10 biscuits were officially shown.
Akhilesh Yadav alleged in his post that the gold smuggling was revealed after a car collided with a police vehicle in Talgram area on Lucknow-Agra Expressway. According to him, the police chased the car and stopped it and during the search recovered 26 gold biscuits of 1 kg each. However, the police said that only 10 kg of gold was recovered.
The former Chief Minister also expressed apprehension that the recovered gold might be tampered with later by declaring it as yellow metal in the government records. Taking aim at the BJP government regarding this entire matter, he termed it as 'double corruption of double engine'.
What did the police tell?
According to Kannauj Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar, the Talgram Police team was returning from checking and Kanwar duty on Saturday. Meanwhile, information was received that a car had collided with a police vehicle on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway. Police reached the spot and found two people in the car. They were identified as Sandeep Jaiswal (29), resident of Maharajganj, and Saroj Pant (33), resident of Nepal. On searching the car, the police found a bag containing 10 yellow colored metal biscuits. Both the accused could not present valid documents, bills or licenses related to the gold.
Gold worth more than Rs 15 crore recovered
Police called SBI's gold evaluator to check the purity and price of gold. During investigation, the metal recovered was found to be 24 carat gold, whose total weight was said to be 10.026 kg. Its estimated market price is around Rs 15.39 crore. The possibility of international trafficking has also been raised as one of the accused in the case is a Nepali citizen. After inquiry by GST officials, investigation has been recommended to the Customs Department. At the same time, after Akhilesh Yadav's allegations, questions have also started being raised regarding the number of gold recovered.
